Benefits - Fastest movement into tree, USDA approved, no exposure to harmful chemicals, Tested in Michigan forests, Over 95% effective. Extremely effective against Emerald Ash Borer.
Drawbacks - Very young trees cannot be treated. Holes need to be drilled in tree to use this method. Chemicals do not always take into the tree.
Root Injection
Benefits - Very fast movement into tree. Chemical goes directly to source.
Drawbacks - Does major damage to lawn. Lengthy process that often is expensive. If ground is saturated chemical will not get into the tree. Can be harmful to drinking water system.
Spraying
Benefits - Can reach high places faster than other methods. Can also be used to knock insects off of tree right away.
Drawbacks - Not very environmentally friendly. Can be an expensive and lengthy process. Animals and people can be harmed by these methods.
Process
Holes are drilled in the tree at 8" increments and chemical gravity drains into tree moving directly into the vascular system of the tree. Chemical units are pulled once tree has taken all the chemical. Holes can be filled but is not required. It is the equivalent of getting a shot at the doctor's office.
Process
Grass is taken up around the tree to locate roots so chemical can be administered. Chemical is brought near tree either by tube or bringing a large barrel into yard. Chemical and water mixture is pumped into tree through root system.
Process
Tubes are ran from a truck and applicator must have lots of protective gear. Chemical is sprayed all over tree and is soaked into bark and leaves of tree. Area should be blocked off.
Injection with Wedgle
Benefits - System gets chemical directly to source to help fight disease. A product that is being used by Arbor Doctor.
Drawbacks - Applicator error can be a problem.
Process
Holes are made in tree with a wrench and tiny mounts are set into tree. Needle is inserted in tree and chemical is injected into tree similar to a shot at the doctors office.
Base Soak
Benefits - Chemical can be applied by homeowner.
Drawbacks - Chemical is often too weak to fight off any disease. Pricing is very expensive and is often confusing on how much to apply. Chemical can get into water system.
Process
Chemical is bought in a dry pellet format and is mixed with water as per instructions. It is often important to have a tape measure to measure the diameter of your tree. Chemical is mixed with many gallons of water and is dumped around the base of the tree. The roots take the chemical up the tree.

More about methods
With new technologies coming out in the field of treating and saving trees Arbor Doctor is always staying cutting edge. In 2010 the method we use has switched from Mauget products to Wedgle products. The ability to keep from drilling trees allows the trees we treat to not have prolonged injuries to the living layer of the tree. Ability to get chemicals flowing into the trees is very easy to notice with the use of Wedgle products. Some new chemicals have come out that allow us to control growth of a tree and production of fruit or seeds in trees.
This past year the Bayer product that is pictured above had to remove emerald ash borer from its label due to its inneffective results in saving ash trees. This now leaves customers with no options to save ash trees on their own. The best active ingredient to kill flat headed borers like the emerald ash borer is immidichloprid. In most methods this active ingredient kills the ash borer with over a 95% success rate.
