One of the last steps to the landscape and a nice way to finish everything off is to place cover over any exposed dirt areas. There are many different options for consumers to pick from. Everything from fine sand to large rock. Looking at function will be very important to your landscape. Also pulling off the overall look of the landscape will be embraced with the ground cover that you choose.
First, while looking at the function of the ground cover you will want to know how water is going to run over it. Mulch, sand and other small or less dense objects will easily wash away when water runs through. Making drain off areas out of natural rock can create the illusion of a stream that also serves a function. It is an inexpensive way to make your landscape more natural looking.
Finding the right color of ground cover will also be very important. Pick a color of ground cover that does not take away from the main features of the landscape. Blending the ground cover in with the color of the house or patio is a great idea. Do not match the color of ground cover to the color of a wall or a patio that touches the ground cover. this will take away from the other structure and make it visually disappear. Choosing a natural tone also works really well with the landscape. The appearance will be that is naturally belongs there thus creating a nice landscape.
Mulches are often used around trees and plants to keep moisture. Do not put on too much mulch as you can suffocate the plants and dwarf their growth rate. Having mulch too high up on the bark of a tree can suffocate the tree as well. Holding too much moisture around some trees makes them very susceptible to fungus diseases that originate from the root system like wilt diseases.
