Hardscapes
When you initially start your designing for you yard looking at the hardscapes or hard ground cover is very important and can bring a variety of visual appearances.  There are several different mediums that you can use including concrete, asphalt, paving stones, and natural stones.  Each different medium has its advantages and disadvantages.

Usually price drives a homeowner to pick one option over another option.  Natural stone is much more expensive then any of the other mediums  Next is either paving stones or concrete depending on wether you hire someone or if you do it yourself.  Lastly is asphalt which is not commonly used on patios unless homeowners are putting in a basketball or tennis court.

If money is not the biggest issue maintenance is something that you will want to pay attention to.  Paving stones will have the least amount of maintenance if they are done correctly.  If done incorrectly they have the most maintenance.  The safest option and most common is concrete or if people have some extra money stamping and or coloring concrete is a good option to bring some naturally to your landscape.  Cracking is quite common in concrete so replacing or fixing the cracks will be an issue that you will have to deal with in 5-10 years of installation.

The most natural look is to lay natural stones down and either grow moss, grass, or concrete in between the cracks.  Either way this look can be so dramatic that it can transform a landscape completely.  Done wrong and it can look like a kid come and put down some stones in your yard.  The most important step if you are doing hardscapes yourself is preparation of the ground.  This process will require removing a lot of soil and using equipment to harden soils and leveling is one of the most important elements involved.  If you get the prep wrong or you just don't pay enough attention to the details problems like water running toward your house can occur.

If you do not have the patience, time and equipment to tackle you own hardscapes by all means do not try and do this task yourself.  Hiring a professional to do some jobs is the best option.
